TAI CHI
There are many types of Tai Chi around the world. At Murray’s Martial Arts we teach Yang, Kir and Bagua. Tai Chi is a graceful exercise which promotes good health and longevity.
The benefits of Tai Chi include:
- Improve inner strength
- Tone muscles and increase flexibility
- Reduce stress and store energy
- Increase body awareness
- Improve balance and coordination
- Learn self defence
- Helps with general aches and pains
- Lowers blood pressure and boosts the immune system.
Throughout Tai Chi the body maintains a posture that is central, upright, level (even light), agile, rounded and lively, with hard and soft movements complementing each other.
The characteristic upright headline of He style with its prolonged deep breathing clears the mind and harmonizes blood and chi circulation, which creates a general state of well being.
"He" Pronounced "Kir" (Mandarin)
He Style Tai Chi originated from the Zhaobao -Style shadow boxing, which was created by Wang Zongyue during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). For seven generations it was passed only to the male offspring of the Wang clan. It was not until the early twentieth century when Chen Qingping became the first student of Zhaobao-style shadow boxing not from the Wang clan. When he taught students this martial art became public. In the 1840's a student from Chen Quinping went to Beijing and studied. He absorbed the quintessence from other schools, came back to show his Master and got permission to teach under his own name. This was Master and founder of He Style Tai Chi, Sifu Kir Cil Yong.
The style was introduced overseas by Ji Changxiu, who is the 11th generation a woman master of He Style Tai Chi, one of the branch schools of Zhaobao style shadow boxing. Other branch schools were Wu and Sun style.
Ji Changxiu began to learn Chinese traditional fighting arts when she was young. At first she learned changquan boxing and shaolin boxing from her uncle and then went on to learn some shadow boxing. She finally became a student of Zheng Wuqing and began to learn He Style Tai Chi. Zheng Wuqing appreciated this woman student very much, and she quickly became his best student.
In the early 1980’s Ji Changxiu left the mainland for Hong Kong, where she set up a Hong Kong Zhaobao He style Shadow Boxing School, in order to introduce Chinese culture to the world. Master Ji Changxiu has countless students, many coming from the USA, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan.
After many years of searching and practising Tai Chi Sigung Henry Murray was travelling overseas and watched Master Ji in practise and appreciated the beauty, uniqueness, and applications of this Tai Chi. Sigung Murray started practising with Master Ji, and quickly adapted to the style, after years of practise and dedication Sigung Murray and Sifu Joan got permission to teach He Style Tai Chi in Australia. Sigung Murray taught this system to his son Sifu Scott Murray and daughters Sifu Heather Murray and Sifu Jackie Murray who already were teaching and practising in Australia.
One of the characteristics of He Style Tai Chi is the faster pace. The learning procedure is as follows:
- Learn the movement
- Study the accuracy
- Learn internal/external
- Application.
In Australia Sigung Henry Murray, Sifu Joan Murray, Sifu Heather Murray, Sifu Scott Murray and Sifu Jackie Murray teach He Style Tai Chi.
BAGUA
Bagua is developed from the eight-sided symbol that is used throughout Chinese culture. Bagua is a powerful martial Arts focused on healing the body through breathing and movements.
Bagua means “eight trigrams”. The trigrams are a vital part of the I-Ching and are composed of three lines each with a different number and combination of broken and whole lines.
Bagua has existed as a buried art in many Chinese martial arts forms for centuries. It has only recently has it found its way to stand on its own as a distinct martial arts form.
Bagua is characterized by the circular movements of the person. The martial artist will complete circles in varying directions and movements. The movement is coupled with hand structures intent on blocking, trapping, or attacking the opponent. The circular movement allows the person to avoid direct attack and find themselves able to take advantage of their opponent’s “blind spots” such as directly behind.
A person practicing Bagua will focus on balance, fluidity, and body unity to time the movements, breathing and step all into one. The idea is to be continuously moving with the image of “floating through clouds”. But do not let the beauty deceive you, for when executed correctly, the art is as deadly as any other martial arts form.
The focus on balance, fluidity, and body unity coupled with the gentle, low-impact movements make this an ideal style for promoting healing.
LITTLE NINJAS
The Little Ninjas Program is a detailed curriculum that focuses on improving preschool age children’s basic motor and listening skills. These skills will help them to enter society with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook. They will become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. At Murray’s Martial Arts we believe the time between the ages of 4 and 6 are the most important years of a child’s development. The Little Ninjas Program will also prepare your child for our Kid’s Kung Fu classes. In the Little Ninja classes, your child will be exposed to positive social interaction. They will learn how to work with others and follow directions from their instructors. Our little Ninja Instructors are good role models who are trained specifically to work with preschool aged children.
The Little Ninjas curriculum consists of developing 8 major skills that are necessary for participation in any sport or activity. The curriculum also contains 8 Little Ninjas personal development skills that are used to reinforce family values. Upon completion of our Little Ninjas Program, your child will become focussed and motivated to achieve any goal they set in life!
The 8 Little Ninja skill requirements are composed of physical and mental benefits. The following are the skills with the benefits from participating in the Little Ninja class:
Skill No 1: FOCUS – This skill will help your child’s aim, listening skills and reaction skills. They will excel faster in any physical activities. Your child will also become a better listener and a more focussed student.
Skills No 2: TEAMWORK – Teamwork is necessary for any young child to develop. The more confident your child is willing to work with others, the more he or she will accomplish. Your child will develop character, which will help him or her make new friends and become a better leader in life.
Skill No 3: CONTROL – Having control means making good decisions. Whether your child is handling a pet or handling a problem, he or she will learn to make the right decisions. Control builds confidence.
Skill No 4: BALANCE – This skill is crucial to develop at an early age. Your child is beginning to participate in many physical activities that are challenging, like riding a two wheel bicycle. Your child will develop good balance and a better posture.
Skill No 5: MEMORY – Developing a good memory is exercise for your child’s brain. The sooner your child exercises, the smarter he or she will become. Our drills are constantly helping your child think and make smart decisions.
Skill No 6: DISCIPLINE – Our instructors use the Little Ninja drills to help create the vision that discipline is fun and rewarding. Your child will take pride in doing the right thing. Your child will also follow directions better.
Skill No 7: FITNESS – It is important for children to understand the importance of being healthy and physically fit. If your child does not burn off excess energy exercising, how will he or she burn off all of that energy?
Skill No 8: COORDINATION – Your child will learn left from right. They will become better physical participants in sports and activities. The better coordination your child has, the fewer injuries your child will sustain.
